Tegel Airport is the primary international gateway for the German capital. The airfield sits atop land that once served as the hunting ground of Prussian nobility. The airfield was a training facility during both world wars and the setting for pioneering efforts in aviation, airship, and rocket technology. During the Berlin Blockade, the site played a leading role as a landing site for the Western Allies. Also known as Berlin Tegel, the airport serves as the hub for Air Berlin and a focus destination for Lufthansa and Ryanair. Other major carriers include Air France, KLM, and United Airlines. Tegel Airport provides connecting flights to major hubs within Europe as well as direct flights to many European, African and Middle Eastern resort destinations.
The airport's distinctive hexagonal-shaped terminal building opened in 1974. To meet increased demand after German reunification and the closure of Tempelhof Airport, a second temporary terminal was constructed. A waiting area and a car park were converted into terminal buildings as well. These modifications enable the airport to operate 82 boarding gates.
Inside the terminals, passengers have access to banking facilities, baggage handling services, and a wide variety of retail shops and restaurants. Passengers will also find a bakery, a flower shop, and a post office. Several airlines operate lounges within the terminals. Internet access and conference rooms are available for a fee. Berlin Tegel is fully accessible by passengers with mobility issues or visual impairments. Parking is available in a multistory car park as well as long and short-term surface lots. A consolidated rental car center is located in front of car park P2.
The facility is located 5 miles to the northwest of the city center. More than 15 million passengers use the terminal buildings each year. Tegel Airport is Germany's fourth most active commercial airfield.
